Ilona Szekeres is a documentary filmmaker from Hungary who just finished her Film and New Media studies at New York University Abu Dhabi. She completed NYU Tisch’s Havana Documentary Video Production program and took advanced documentary coursework at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in New York.
Her film Alas won the Best Documentary category of the 2019 Fusion Film Festival at NYU Tisch and both the Audience and Critics’ Choice Awards at Gainesville Latino Film Festival’s Short Film Competition. Ilona has worked on film projects in Abu Dhabi, Havana, New York and Hungary.
She will continue the documentary path as she recently got a scholarship to attend DocNomads, an international Documentary Filmmaking graduate program across three countries: Portugal, Hungary and Belgium.

Ilona Szekeres believes in the power of stories to shape culture and transform society. She enjoys connecting with people, hearing their stories and learning from their experiences.
Her documentary films touch upon themes of family, loneliness, the father figure, the importance of relationships, and people’s passions.
