The theme of the August 2018 DOCUMENTARY FEEDBACK Film Festival in Toronto was “Pursuit of Freedom”. Every character on all of these presented films were either looking for freedom – either attempting to remove themselves from a hostile environment, or simply attempting to be free within themself.
This was an important festival for us. We are moving from bi-monthly to weekly festivals in Toronto and this was the first time we did a festival just 7 days after the previous one. I was worried that it would be our first non-sellout in over a year, but the opposite occurred as we were sold out 2 days before the event occurred.
Part of this reason was the quality of films we were presenting. Documentary Festivals play well in Toronto – very well. At our Los Angeles festival we have more trouble selling out.
Programming short festivals isn’t a perfect science. Sometimes I do well with it as other times I fail. For this festival, I was very happy. Perhaps the best programming job I’ve ever done. Everything just seemed to flow very nicely.
