The theme of the festival was “RESET”.
Every film showcased was about a situation or character that needed to stop and start over again – or rebuild from scratch.
NOTE: This was the 5th festival showcasing the best of DOCUMENTARY Short Films at the festival. We are receiving so many amazing DOC SHORTS that we will have 7 documentary festivals in 2018.
Some documentary shorts can get intense. They are about important subject matters that can rev up the emotions of the audiene and really make them see a world they do not see very often.
The trick when programming documentary shorts is to make sure that every single film is not a 10 on the intensity scale. You need to mix the lineup up with a more light hearted film so we’re not all feeling sad for ourselves at the end.
It’s an artform that I am still attempting to master. We always want the audience leaving the night wanting more, while being satisfied by the entertainment they watched. The last thing you want is them leaving out of feelings and emotions because what they saw was perhaps a bit too much.
There are so many talented documentary filmmakers out there. It’s going to be a fun 2018.
