The theme of the March 2018 Documentary Short Film Festival was “Bravery.” Every situation was about a character confronting a momental task.

This was a crazy day for the city of Toronto. It was the day before two interlocking holidays in Easter and Passover, something that rarely occurs in the calendar. To top it off the local professional baseball team (Blue Jays) was having its home opener, while it poured a windy and at times violent rain all day and night. So many people were driving into the city as many people were driving out for the holiday. Bottomline: The city was in a mass traffic and transit jam which lead to more than a few accidents, which caused even more delays.

But at 7pm the lights went “off” and we did our festival. Much to my happiness it was a full house ready to watch the best of new documentary shorts from around the world.

The MVP of the night was Festival Director Mary Cox. She pulled together a new team of volunteers, plus our regular moderator got stuck on set of “The Rick Mercer Show” and someone from the past had to fill in. She managed it all without a sweat and continues to be a solid worker for the organization.

See you at the festivals.
