ART AND LIFE: The Story of Jim Phillips, 90min.,
Directed by John Edward Makens
A pioneer of graphic art, Jim Phillips, known for his bold and visceral imagery, has left an indelible mark on the world of rock posters, surf, and skateboard art. Drawing inspiration from his life in Santa Cruz, California, Jim’s journey from publishing his first artwork in Surfer Quarterly in 1962 to becoming the art director for Santa Cruz Skateboards, shaped the golden era of skateboarding.

IMPOSSIBLE TOWN, 90min., USA

When her father dies unexpectedly, Dr. Ayne Amjad is thrust to the helm of a decades-long struggle to aid a southern West Virginia town beset by cancer-causing chemicals. Haunted by her late father’s mandate to “help others” at all costs, Ayne is caught between her dream of raising a family and an audacious but all-consuming plan to relocate the town and bring closure to her father’s work.

GREAT OCEAN LOVE, 30min., Australia

Great Ocean Love is part documentary, part road-trippin’ surf flick that follows Belinda Baggs, Linley Hurrell, and Lilly Pollard on a journey of discovery along the Great Ocean Road. Centred around the teachings of Gunditjmara whale dreamer Yaraan Bundle. Along the way, they meet saltwater women who share their love for the rugged coastline they call home.

YOU JUST CAN’T SEE THEM FROM THE ROAD, 49min., USA

An immigrant family in California’s Central Valley faces the loss of their land and way of life. One of the few remaining ranchers in the Bay Area watches urban sprawl creep in from every direction. Cowboys work in the shadow of the historic Hearst Castle. One of the largest Black landowners in the state discovers Native American artifacts on his ranch. You Just Can’t See Them From the Road is a documentary portrait of modern West Coast ranchers—invisible to and misunderstood by the rapidly modernizing society they sustain.

TIGHTROPE WALKER, 12min., Turkey

“Cambaz” features mostly visuals captured from an attic, with most of the footage dating back to 2020. The documentary tells the story of a small family living in Sarajevo during the initial year of the global pandemic lockdown. They witness a fire erupting in a neighboring house and team up with an elderly rooftop craftsman from across the street to play a game and overcome the barriers in their way.
