RESISTANCE – THEY FOUGHT BACK, 111min., USA
Directed by Paula S Apsell, Kirk Wolfinger
They Fought Back: We’ve all heard of the Warsaw Ghetto, but how many of us know how widespread and prevalent Jewish resistance to Nazi oppression was? Instead, many believe Jews went to their deaths “like sheep to the slaughter.” Filmed in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Israel and the USA, with participation from renowned Holocaust scholars, Resistance – They Fought Back will provide a needed corrective to this myth of Jewish passivity. Moving personal stories of Jewish resistance fighters, especially brave female couriers, reveal little known exploits across ghettos large and small. Fighting as partisans, thousands of Jews kept Nazis out of the forests of Europe and saved Jewish lives. In six of the most horrific death camps, such as Auschwitz, Treblinka and Sobibor, Jewish prisoners rose in rebellion. And even when weapons were unavailable and armed resistance impossible, Jews banded together to stand up against the Germans in nonviolent ways – documenting war crimes, caring for the sick and needy, educating children, and maintaining a high level of cultural and spiritual observance.
