I AM KANAKA, 15min., UK
Directed by Genevieve Sulway
With a dark history, 5% speaking the native language and 10% living in poverty, Hawaii is in danger of losing its traditions forever. “I am Kanaka” gives a glimpse into the future with Kaina Makua’s non-profit program teaching Hawaiian language, sustainability and life skills to disadvantaged indigenous kids aged 5-20.

THE LAST GLACIERS: JOURNEY TO THE EXTRMME, 100min., Hong Kong
Directed by Craig Leeson
The Last Glaciers, Journey to the Extreme, tells the story of climate change through the visual impact of one of the planet’s most important and yet critically threatened resources – glaciers. A trip to the Alps in 2017 shocked award-winning filmmaker Craig Leeson who witnessed the tragic deaths of mountaineers due to avalanche on Europe’s deadliest mountain, Mont Blanc. Craig’s investigation finds that climate change is drastically altering these special environments, making the mountains warmer and more dangerous. Around the world the story is frighteningly similar, but scientists point out that climate change is causing a much more widespread threat to humanity, not just the natural world.

THE LAST KOALAS, 54min., Australia

The summer of 2020 was characterised by catastrophic bushfire events around Australia. On Kangaroo Island in South Australia, over 200,000 hectares was burned, including 90,000 hectares of national park. A thriving colony of 50,000 koalas called Kangaroo Island home prior to the devastating Black Summer bushfires. Now, as few as 5,000 – 10,000 koalas remain. As the koala species edges closer to the threat of extinction on mainland Australia, this documentary explores the incredible rescue, recovery, rehabilitation and release effort undertaken for the surviving Kangaroo Island koalas; a colony which scientists have signalled may well be Australia’s last.

SONIDERO METROPOLIS: MEXICAN SOUND SYSTEMS IN LOS ANGELES, 22min,. USA
Directed by Alvaro Parra
Sonidero Metropolis is the first episode in a documentary series on Mexican sound system culture, known as Sonideros. The Los Angeles episode explores the connection between the cumbia epicenter that is Puebla, Mexico and Los Angeles, California, a city where thousands of Poblanos now reside. Antonio De Jesus, better known as Sonido Fantasma, has been a working sonidero for 28 years. A consummate veteran at the top of his game, he often plays in cities across the U.S. and Mexico, a rare feat in this industry. 17 year old Gardena resident Abimael Amaro, aka Sonido Profeta, played his first show at L.A’s Salon Lazaro’s at the age of 13. Sonido Profeta is part of a new generation of sonideros that utilize live stream technology to make a name for themselves in the U.S. and abroad. Sonido Fantasma and Sonido Profeta are originally from Puebla, Mexico. Themes of migration, cumbia, and labor are examined via the lives of these two sonideros at opposite ends of their trajectories.
